MacEwen: “Let us come together as a body and finally say to the people of Washington that yes, we will live up to our paramount duty and appropriate education funding before any other program. Let us say to the children of Washington state that we as a House will stop holding your education funding hostage to other political means.”
Sattgast: Republican Representative Drew MacEwen of Union. Majority Democrats, including 35th District State Representative Kathy Haigh of Shelton, voted against the proposed rule change to fund education first. MacEwen also supported a change in House rules that would have required a two-thirds majority to raise taxes. Those are the same provisions of Initiative 1185 that voters approved statewide, including 69 percent in the 35th District. Democrats also rejected that rule change on a party-line vote, 52 to 41.
